What you should be reading, listening to and attending this month
We have a culture of continuous improvement at Mobas. We challenge our team to read and learn as much as they can about our world, our clients and their specialist areas. Why is this important? Because fresh ideas, thinking and approaches allow us to continually improve and develop to serve our clients as effectively as possible.
As Harry Truman famously said, “Not all readers are leaders, but all leaders are readers”.
So if you're keen to develop but unsure where to start, each month we’re going to compile a list of what we as a team are reading, listening to and events we’re attending to give you a shortcut to great insights that will help you evolve as a leader.
Here are our recommendations for June:
What we're reading
We have a culture of continuous improvement at Mobas. We challenge our team to read and learn as much as they can about our world, our clients and their specialist areas. Why is this important? Because fresh ideas, thinking and approaches allow us to continually improve and develop to serve our clients as effectively as possible.
This month we’re inspiring ourselves creatively. We like to look at things from different industries and take inspiration from everywhere. So, this month, it’s not so much a ‘read’, more a ‘look’, although it is still a book!
The book currently doing the rounds in our studio is Soled Out. It’s essentially a catalogue of over 700 pages documenting sneaker / trainer advertising over the years – from the very early days when sneakers were used purely as a piece of sporting equipment, into the years when they became fashionable and mainstream.
It’s also not just the brands you’d expect, although they do feature heavily, but there are also more obscure brands which came and went over the years. It’s also interesting (or possibly worrying?) to see some of the things that were allowed at the time! You can get lost / inspired for hours in this book so if you have any interest in advertising and design history, it’s well worth a read.
There’s more about the book here.
What we’re listening to
Well, this month sees the return of the Mobas ‘What’s the Point’ podcast, so what else would anyone be listening to?
‘What’s the Point’ a podcast where we pull at threads of stories and topics related to the work we do and see where it takes us! It’s not a sales tool: we rarely talk about work we have done or promote our services. It’s purely an after-hours chat, over a drink or two, which we record and put out for everyone to listen to. Who knows what we might end up discussing / debating / arguing over!
You can listen to previous episodes on Spotify here.
Or Apple Podcasts here.
What we’re attending
We’re really looking forward to attending MadFest early next month.
MadFest bills itself as ‘the UK’s biggest destination marketing festival’ and really does carry a festival feel. Members of our creative and strategy team will be heading down to London’s East End where an old brewery is being used for this year’s event, with talks and ‘mingles’ from some of the UK’s most influential marketeers from big brands, agencies and the sporting world.
Happening over three days, the event is designed to have a relaxed feel rather than just being an event where people talk at you. There’s food, bars, DJs and like-minded people all together in one place.
